Biological Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics
Christy LaFlamme entered the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College as a transfer student from Palm Beach State College, where she was early admitted after being homeschooled. Christy is a currently a junior, majoring in Biological Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. She knew after touring the campus that the Honors College was a perfect fit. She felt welcomed by the professors and sensed the close knit community of the campus. Christy explains that the supportive environment made her feel valued as an individual and not just another student face in the crowd. She had toured many other schools, but based on her experience felt that the Honors College would serve her best. Christy also chose the Honors College because of the opportunities provided by the research opportunities on campus, including those at the Scripps and Max Planck institutes. She has been very active in campus life, pursuing her passion for biomedical research; serving as President for the Council for Scholarship, Inquiry, Design, and Engagement; working with the Undergraduate Research club (C-SIDE); and serving as a mentor OWL with the Scripps Research Institute Educational Outreach Program. Christy is also conducting research through the Scripps SURF program and has become a Scripps Research Institute BLEU Scholar. She plans to continue her education by working toward a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences. She hopes to one day mentor others as a university professor, encouraging inquiry through the integration of the sciences and the arts.
