Dr. Ozlem Yavuz-Petrowski

Dr. Yavuz-Petrowski is an Instructor and the General Chemistry Lab Director at Florida Atlantic University, in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. She oversees over 2,000 General Chemistry 1 and Lab students per year. Dr. Yavuz-Petrowski has developed and teaches several online courses, has created zero-cost Open Educational Resources and most recently was recognized by the Online Learning Consortium as a recipient of the Accelerate 2021 Excellence and Innovation in Online Teaching Award for her work in developing 360 Degree Labs and incorporating virtual reality in her teachings.

Since 2020, Dr. Yavuz-Petrowski has been working with a diverse and interdisciplinary research team at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) as part of the FAU STEM Research Group for Digital Laboratory Learning. Dr. Yavuz-Petrowski serves as the lead chemistry researcher on the research team. Her research focuses on Identifying, investigating and developing novel digital and virtual approaches to improve science laboratory and technical learning for STEM majors.

Ozlem Yavuz-Petrowski received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Physical Chemistry, and BS in Chemistry all at the Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey. She had a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Chemistry, University of Central Florida; a visiting scientist position at Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. After completing her post-doctoral studies, she started working at Fractal Systems, Inc. as a staff scientist and was involved in the research and development of conducting polymers, metal oxides and magnetic materials for sensor applications. Later, she joined NanoEner, Inc. as a senior materials scientist and was focused on the development of Li-ion battery electrodes while working on new material preparations, deposition systems and carried out highly advanced electrochemical testing and morphology analysis.Dr. Yavuz-Petrowski is a published author and has over 25 articles in scientific journals highlighting her earlier career research. She also was invited and served as a past member of the Environmental Protection Agency Review Board Panel.
