Opportunities
There are many opportunities available to our MFA students. Internships, working for our national literary magazine, Swamp Ape Review, membership in our English Graduate Student Association (EGSS), and travel scholarships are just some of the perks of being an MFA student here at FAU.
Our annual Off the Page reading series introduces students to visiting writers and agents. For example, for the 2017/2018 academic year, we hosted readings by Ira Sukrungruang and others.
Our annual Sanders Writer-in-Residence is another wonderful opportunity. Each year we host a different author who leads a one-week workshop for our MFA graduate students (this course is noncredit and free) as well as gives a reading. Our past Sanders Writer in Residence have included Danez Smith (2019), Paul Lisicky (2018), Justin Torres (2017), Tom Sleigh (2016), Jo Ann Beard (2015), Tayari Jones (2014), Eula Biss (2012), Michael Martone (2011), Forrest Gander (2010), Dinty Moore (2009), Rosmarie Waldrop (2007), and Sven Birkerts (2006). These one week workshops are a great way to gain alternate perspectives and to grow as a writer. Check out links to blog posts students have written about past Sanders workshop experiences: Danez Smith workshop from 2019, Paul Lisicky workshop from 2018, Tom Sleigh workshop from 2016, Jo Ann Beard workshop in 2015, Tayari Jones workshop in 2014, Eula Biss workshop in 2012, and Michael Martone workshop in 2011.
Our library is home to the Jaffe Center for book arts, the Weiner Spirit of America collection of early American and European materials, and the Recorded Sound Archives. Additionally, FAU hosts the nation's only academic library with an ensemble-in-residence, which performs major concerts based in part on collections that are housed at the S.E. Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.
The Department of Theatre and Dance offers many wonderful shows each year. Student tickets are discounted or free.
