Welcome to the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment and Science at Florida Atlantic University. As the new name indicates, we have widened the scope of this South Florida-based continuing education program for professional journalists. Participants in the next session, scheduled for May 21-26, 2012 at FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, will explore developments in science, biotechnology and medicine in addition to the environmental subject matter the program has traditionally examined. The expanded agenda will better connect the program to FAU's plan to launch a science journalism master's degree program in mid-2012.
The institute is an intensive, weeklong program of lectures, discussions and almost daily field trips to natural areas, research centers and other locations from Fort Pierce to Miami. Up to 25 journalists from all types of media are selected to attend each year thanks to a grant provided by the Scripps Howard Foundation in Cincinnati, Ohio. The six-day program is operated by the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies with help from the Florida Center for Environmental Studies. FAU is a state-funded, research-level university with more than 28,000 students and more than 1,300 faculty on seven campuses.
The institute's 2012 agenda is under development: More details will be posted here in the fall. Full-time journalists of all stripes, who specialize in science reporting or are further developing those skills, are encouraged to apply -- staffer or freelancer; print, radio or television reporter; web writer or blogger; producer or editor. Applications to the program's fifth session are now being accepted with a March 1, 2012 deadline.
