Welcome, Coach Jakus!
Friday, Mar 29, 2024Today was an exciting day at Florida Atlantic, as we officially introduced John Jakus as the new head men’s basketball coach. Coach Jakus joins us from Baylor University, where he served as the associate head coach since 2022. He spent the last 12 seasons on staff at Baylor (2012-2014 and 2017-2024) and Gonzaga University (2014-2017), coaching under two of college basketball’s most successful head coaches: Baylor’s Scott Drew and Gonzaga’s Mark Few.
Coach Jakus helped lead Baylor to six NCAA Tournament appearances, two Sweet 16 appearances, and the 2021 National Championship title. During his time on staff, the team had a 217-86 overall record and a 100-58 record in Big 12 Conference play. An outstanding recruiter, Coach Jakus helped Baylor land two Top 5 classes (three Top 15 classes) over the last four seasons, making it one of only two programs in the nation to have Top 5 recruiting classes in both 2023 and 2024.
John is an accomplished leader with a demonstrated history of success, and I know our fans share my excitement in having a coach with such an impressive background join our family. This is a tremendous time for men’s basketball at Florida Atlantic, and I have every confidence that Coach Jakus will continue the program’s phenomenal trajectory.
Welcome again to John; his wife, Sara; and their children, Brady, Cal and Harper.
Go Owls!
