Spring Sports are in Full Swing

Spring is a great time for sports here FAU, with some of our most successful teams back in play. The FAU baseball team kicks off its 2020 season today, hosting Delaware at 6:30 p.m. Outfielder  Bobby Morgensen , first baseman  Andru Summerall  and second baseman  Francisco Urbaez  were named to the league’s Preseason All-Conference Team. Last year, the Owls were the Conference USA regular-season champions and Head Coach  John McCormack  was named the 2019 C-USA Coach of the Year. It was the team’s second regular season title since 2016 and its sixth regular season title overall. The players and coaching staff will be presented with their championship rings at tonight’s game.

Beach volleyball kicks off their season on Friday, February 21. Last year, the team was ranked as high as 11 th  nationally. It also earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award last year.

Several of our other spring sports are already underway, including tennis and softball. Our women’s tennis team is 3-0 overall and our men’s tennis team is 4-1 at home. Women’s tennis standout  Martina Kudelova  was the 2019 C-USA Freshman of the Year and was ranked No. 51 nationally in Fall 2019. The men’s tennis team had a successful 2019 season, winning 19 games and receiving seven All-Conference honors.

The FAU softball team has a long history of excellence, with 12 conference championship titles. Prior to the start of the season, outfielder  Fayth Davis  was named to the Conference USA Preseason Team. Last season, Fayth led the team in batting average and was named to the C-USA second team. Head coach  Joan Joyce  recently was selected as the recipient of the 2020 TPW Fastpitch ELITE Life Award, adding to her many other accolades, including 20 Halls of Fame.
