This week, a team of 26 FAU High School students competed in the 31st annual Solar Car Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. With great success, the Florida Atlantic Solar Owls won the Lockheed Martin Award for demonstrating the highest level of engineering excellence and finished second in the competition’s Cruiser Division. The team earned its accomplishments under the leadership of Allan Phipps, director of The Cane Institute and STEM coordinator at FAU High and A.D. Henderson.

Over the course of the four-day competition, the Solar Owls raced their ALSET Solar CyberSedan — a vehicle they built from the ground up at FAU TechRunway. The Solar Car Challenge featured 32 teams from 12 states, with the Solar Owls becoming the first high school or university team from Florida to build this type of car and compete.

The Solar Car Challenge was created to help motivate students in the fields of science, technology and alternative energy, and the Solar Owls demonstrated tremendous innovation in their design and construction. We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements in the competition, as well as their remarkable ingenuity in creating the CyberSedan. Thank you to all of the mentors and sponsors who supported the team’s success.

Congratulations, Solar Owls!
