FAU College of Medicine Celebrates Match Day
Monday, Mar 20, 2023On Friday, March 17, the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine celebrated Match Day, a national reveal in which future doctors discover their residency matches for post-graduate training programs. With great success, Florida Atlantic’s fourth-year medical students earned a 100 percent match, securing their next steps to become practicing physicians.
Included in the Schmidt College of Medicine’s class of 2023, we are proud to recognize Sarah Paulmbo and Nadia Sial, who are the first two medical students from the FAU High School Med Direct Program to receive their residency matches. Palumbo will be staying at the FAU Schmidt College of Medicine for a residency in internal medicine, and Sial will be heading to Yale - New Haven Hospital in Connecticut for a residency in neurology. We also commend Cody Jackson, Ph.D., FAU’s first M.D./Ph.D. dual-degree student. His match connected him with Oregon Health & Science University for a residency in internal medicine.
As part of the Schmidt College of Medicine’s mission to address Florida’s doctor shortage, 28 percent of the class of 2023 will conduct their residency in-state, with 38 percent specializing in primary care. Overall, the class of 2023 matched in highly competitive specialties such as plastic surgery, psychiatry, orthopedic surgery, dermatology, neurological surgery, ophthalmology, among others.
FAU also celebrated several couple matches: Sa’Rah and Emmanuel McNeely; Zaimary Meneses and Nikolas Ujeta; Anna Wienand and Gabriel Lama; Sierra Conine and Matthew Zinner; Monica Espinosa and Bob Grady; and Alayna Kelly and Isaiah Herrera. Additionally, the class of 2023 welcomed nine babies while completing the program. Among them is the McNeelys’ 17-month-old daughter, Grace, who Emmanuel helped to deliver under the supervision of an OB/GYN physician.
Among the Florida institutions where the class of 2023 placed are FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine; Memorial Healthcare System; University of Miami/Jackson Health System; University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine; University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Holy Cross; University of Florida College of Medicine – Shands Hospital; Cleveland Clinic Florida; Bayfront Medical Center; HCA Healthcare East Florida Division GME; and Orlando Health.
The class of 2023 also placed in several top institutions nationally, including Boston Children’s Hospital; New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center in New York; Yale – New Haven Hospital; University of Chicago Medical Center; Children’s Hospital Los Angeles; Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; and Brown University in Rhode Island.
We are incredibly proud of FAU’s students in the Schmidt College of Medicine. Their consistent achievements on Match Day are a testament to their extraordinary talents and unwavering commitment to medicine. I know they will continue to excel as they move on to the next phase of their residency training. Congratulations, class of 2023!
