Celebrating Dr. Kalva’s Induction into the National Academy of Inventors

Congratulations to Hari Kalva, Ph.D., who has been elected to the rank of National Academy of Inventors® (NAI) Fellow for his cutting-edge research in the field of video compression and communication. NAI Fellow status is the highest professional accolade bestowed upon academic inventors who have made an impact on quality of life, economic development and welfare of society.

Dr. Kalva is an associate chair and professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, as well as director of the Multimedia Lab in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is a named inventor on more than 18 standard essential patents that are used in virtually all modern video distribution and streaming products and services. Through a research partnership with OP Solutions, a Boston-based tech company, Dr. Kalva’s inventions contributed to the novel technology that comprises the latest Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard alongside some of the biggest companies in the world such as Qualcomm, Apple, Tencent, Ericsson and ByteDance.

Dr. Kalva is the fifth member of the FAU family to be named an NAI Fellow. He joins Randy Blakely, Ph.D.; Gregg Fields, Ph.D.; Herb Weissbach, Ph.D.; and Amy Wright, Ph.D. as one of the most renowned academic inventors in the world.

Becoming an NAI Fellow is a tremendous honor and a well-deserved recognition for Dr. Kalva. I am very proud of his high accomplishment and innovative contributions to society.
