ED Awards FAU Federal Assistance for Displaced Students
Florida Atlantic University was recently awarded $88,400 in new federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education to assist in the continued cost of educating students displaced by the 2017 hurricanes. Nine students from Puerto Rico and one from the U.S. Virgin Islands were able to begin classes at FAU in August because of this grant.
“Puerto Rico and the U.S.V.I. have been on a long road to recovery and I am hopeful that this new federal funding will continue to provide some relief to families with college students,” said FAU President John Kelly.
Last fall, FAU announced that out-of-state tuition fees would be waived for Puerto Rican and U.S.V.I. students whose families were adversely affected by Hurricane Maria. A total of 14 students benefited from those waivers and took the opportunity to move and continue their schooling in Florida.
