FAU Celebrates Summer 2020 Graduates
Florida Atlantic University will confer more than 1,900 degrees for the summer 2020 semester in a special virtual ceremony. The new graduates will join more than 175,000 alumni who have graduated from FAU since the University opened its doors in 1964.
“The Summer Class of 2020 endured a spring and summer unlike any in the history of our university, our nation, or even the world,” said FAU President John Kelly. “I am very proud of our graduates’ determination and resilience, and I extend to them my heartfelt congratulations.”
Summer commencement highlights the accomplishments of several outstanding graduates including:
- Shernette Dunn, 38, a lifelong educator, is currently serving as director for reading strategies and first year success at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, where she helps to prepare future officers to serve the nation. She traveled back and forth between Colorado and Boca Raton every week for 17 weeks to attend classes, while working full time, caring for her son and volunteering in her community. Dunn will receive her fourth degree from FAU, a Ph.D. in adult and community education.
Some interesting statistics regarding the summer graduating class include the fact that 50 of the degree recipients are over the age of 50 and eight are over the age of 60. The oldest graduate is 65, and the youngest is 17. The graduates represent 32 countries.
