FAU to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Events

Florida Atlantic University will commemorate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with a series of events for students, faculty and staff beginning Friday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 15 at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses.
The following events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:
Zumba! Group Fitness
Monday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.
Campus Recreation, Room B
Zumba is a dance fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez that infuses Latin dances such as samba and salsa with aerobic elements.
Movie Series: ‘Selena’
Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Student Union Lobby
Join the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs for a movie night. “Selena” is the true story about the life, career and death of Selena Quintanilla-Perez, a Texas-born Tejano singer who rose from poverty to performing at the Astrodome. Selena gained the admiration of fans in the United States and Mexico while successfully crossing over into a male-dominated Latin music genre.
Latin Night
Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Student Union
Students are invited to listen to the various forms of music within the Hispanic/Latinx community and learn a few dance moves as well.
Global Coffee Hour: Hispanic Heritage Month Overview
Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 10 to 11 a.m.
Center for Global Engagement
Come join us for a Hispanic flavored coffee hour! We will talk about the history of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Spanish/Latin influence in Florida, and share information about events planned at FAU.
Latin Fest
Friday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
SO Rotunda
FAU’s Multicultural Programming Board will kick-off a month-long celebration of Hispanic/Latinx culture, customs and traditions. Stop by to enjoy cultural foods and games, and learn interesting facts that highlight the many contributions and accomplishments of Hispanic/Latinx people.
Movie Series: ‘Frida’
Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Student Union Lobby
Join the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs for a movie night. “Frida” is the biography of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, who channeled the pain of a crippling injury and her rocky marriage into her work.
Carreras del Movimiento Latin@/X (Careers of the Latin@/x Movement)
Monday, Oct. 2 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Palmetto Palm Room, Student Union
Carreras del Movimiento Latin@/X (Careers of the Latin@/x Movement) invites members of the FAU community to discuss how their Latin@/x identity shapes and/or impacts their careers and the Latin@/x movement in the workplace. This event is in collaboration with the FAU Career Center.
Movie Series: ‘Beatriz at Dinner’
Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Join the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs for a movie night. “Beatriz at Dinner” is a comedy that details the life of a poor Mexican immigrant who builds a career as a holistic medicine practitioner in the United States. While attending a wealthy client's dinner party, she meets an arrogant billionaire and their lives are forever changed.

Participants are invited to an open forum where they can identify ways in which FAU can provide additional support and resources to grow the Hispanic/Latinx community on campus.

Friday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m.
The Burrow
Students are invited to dance the night away as they learn how to salsa.
Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Celebration
Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Burrow
Students will be immersed in Latin American music while enjoying authentic Cuban cuisine and participating in Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month trivia.

Monday, Sept. 25 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Month with our new Broward Program Board Event: Diversity in Latin America. It will be an afternoon full of fun games, activities, food and refreshments.
Hispanic/Latinx Heritage: Careers in Sports and Recreation
Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 5 to 6 p.m.
SD-105, Student Union
Hispanic/Latinx professionals from various sports and recreational industries will share their stories of success and explain how they overcame difficulties along the way.
