FAU Receives First Forward Designation
Florida Atlantic University’s Office of First-Generation Student Success was recently named a “First Forward Institution” by The Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and The Suder Foundation.
The Office of First-Generation Student Success serves as a referral hub to the various services that exist to inspire and assist first-generation students at FAU, including academic support, advising, financial assistance and scholarships, mentorship, and the “First and Proud” registered student organization.
“FAU is dedicated to creating a brighter future for talented first-generation students,” said FAU President John Kelly. “Failure to do so puts us at risk of losing many of our most gifted high school graduates.”
The First Forward designation recognizes institutions of higher education who have demonstrated a commitment to improving experiences and advancing outcomes of first-generation college students. Selected institutions receive professional development, community-building experiences, and a first look at the Center’s research and resources.
“First Forward is an exciting opportunity for FAU to join an elite community of professionals prepared to share evidence-based practices and resources, troubleshoot challenges, generate knowledge, and continue to advance the success of first-generation students across the country. We are excited to see a groundswell of activity from the First Forward cohort and know FAU will be a significant contributor,” said Kevin Kruger, Ph.D., president of NASPA.
