FAU to Host Events for Disability Awareness Month
Florida Atlantic University will be hosting events at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Davie campuses to commemorate Disability Awareness Month during October.
Florida Atlantic University will be hosting events at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Davie campuses to commemorate Disability Awareness Month during October. The events are sponsored by FAU’s Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and are open to FAU students, faculty, and staff.
The following events will take place on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:
Seated Volleyball
Monday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.
Recreation & Fitness Center
Seated volleyball is a Paralympic sport for athletes with physical disabilities such as limb loss, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, and brain injuries. Rules are slightly modified from non-disabled volleyball, and the athletes are seated on the floor with a lower net.
Goalball
Thursday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.
Recreation & Fitness Center
Goalball is a sport for blind athletes where teams of three try to throw a ball embedded with bells into the opponent’s goal. Participants judge the position and movement of the ball by the sound of the bell. The event will be officiated by Donte Mickens, a U.S. Paralympian and national goalball competitor.
Tech Expo
Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
Live Oak Pavilion, Student Union
The Tech Expo will showcase local vendors of assistive technology, which is technology that supports people with disabilities. There also will be local agencies who offer services to people with disabilities, and attendees without a disability will be able to experience disability simulations.
The following event will take place on the John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Dr., in Jupiter:
Taste of Disability Luncheon
Monday, Oct. 17 at noon
The Burrow
During the Taste of Disability Luncheon, participants without a disability will assume a disability while they eat lunch. The goal is for them to better understand what those with a disability experience on a daily basis.
The following event will take place at FAU’s Davie campus, 3200 College Ave.:
