Theatre Lab, the professional resident theater company of Florida Atlantic University, recently was recognized with two Carbonell Awards at the 43rd annual Carbonell Award Ceremony. Dawn C Shamburger, Theatre Lab’s resident costume designer who has designed the costumes for every full production at Theatre Lab since its opening in 2016, received Best Costume Design for her work on “The Revolutionists,” by Lauren Gunderson. Additionally, Niki Fridh took home the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her work in “Tar Beach,” by Tammy Ryan.
“We are incredibly proud of our Carbonell Awards winners,” said Matt Stabile, artistic director for Theatre Lab. “And we are so very grateful to all of our FAU family for the support in making the Theatre Lab dream a reality.”
The Carbonells honor the best of South Florida theater from the previous calendar year, and include work by theaters from Jupiter to south Miami. Out of these hundreds of productions, approximately 97 were “recommended” for potential awards, with Theatre Lab nominated for six. Besides Shamburger and Fridh, the nominees included Desmond Gallant for Best Actor in “Be Here Now”; Mia Matthews, Best Supporting Actress in “The Revolutionists”; Matt Stabile, Best Director for “The Revolutionists”; and Michael McClain for Best Scenic Design in “Be Here Now.”
Theatre Lab presents three main stage productions each season, along with playwright master classes, play festivals and readings on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. For more information, visit fau.edu/theatrelab.
