University Galleries Presents Artist Lectures

Lectures to feature internationally recognized artists Brookhart Jonquil and Dara Friedman, whose work is on display in "New Art.".


The University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University will present public lectures by internationally recognized artists Brookhart Jonquil and Dara Friedman in conjunction with the “New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship Exhibition,” currently on display in FAU’s Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery. Both artists are recipients of the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Arts Fellowship. Jonquil’s lecture will take place on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and Freidman’s will be on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., both in the Performing Arts Building, room 101, adjacent to the Schmidt Center Gallery, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The lectures and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Jonquil received a B.A. in art history and a B.F.A. from the University of Arizona, and a M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions in Miami venues such as Emerson Dorsch Gallery, De la Cruz Collection and Bass Museum of Art. He has participated in many group exhibitions nationally and internationally, most recently, “Spaces of the Soul,” Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, Uruguay; “Ideal Perfection,” LVL3, Chicago; and “Alternative Contemporaneity: TAZ,” MoCA, North Miami. Jonquil’s work can be found in the Fountainhead Collection, Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson, among others. Most recently, he was an artist-in-residence at BRIClab and ACRE. Along with two other works Jonquil’s created a site-specific sculptural installation in the Schmidt Center Gallery Public Space, installed with the assistance of FAU students.

Friedman obtained a B.F.A. from Vassar College in New York, and an M.F.A. from the School of Motion Pictures at the University of Miami. Her work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions nationally and internationally at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Kunst der Westküse, Akersum, Germany; and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  She has participated in numerous group exhibitions including “2nd People’s Biennial,” Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit; “Sacré 101 – An Exhibition Based on The Rite of Spring,” Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, Switzerland; “Videodrome ll,” New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; and “Dara Friedman Romance,” American Academy in Rome, Italy.  Friedman’s work is in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and Rubell Family Collection, Miami; among others. In 2001, she was awarded the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome. Friedman will work with FAU students by conducting a workshop for a select group of students from the art, theater and dance departments.

“New Art” presents recent work by 12 artists from Florida’s five southeastern counties. These artists are winners of a highly competitive annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium, with prizes of $7,500 and $15,000 grants.

The University Galleries at FAU present exhibitions of contemporary art, humanities disciplines and related programs designed to stimulate thought, discussion, and other responses to the visual arts. The University Galleries are committed to building university and community-based audiences by collaborating with academic departments and student groups in the university as well as with people and organizations in the south Florida area. The University Galleries are open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors must obtain a $2 parking pass or use the limited metered parking before visiting the Galleries.
