Florida’s incoming Senate President Joe Negron visited Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business on the last day of his four-day tour of the state university system.
His visit focused on a touring the college and open discussions with students, senior faculty and administrators. The accounting scholars program, FAU’s Tech Runway, FAU’s appreciative advising program and ways the state’s elected officials can help ensure students have what they need to succeed were discussed at length.
At the beginning of the tour, Negron asked specifically about the accounting scholars program at which time the College of Business Dean Daniel Gropper pointed out that three of the accounting scholar students happened to be sitting right behind the Senator at which point he turned around and had an in-depth face-to-face conversation about the program with them.
“I enjoyed meeting with students enrolled in FAU’s Accounting Scholars Program, which has a 100 percent job placement rate. Many of these students are already working in their field of study and have the multiple job offers when they graduate. FAU’s Tech Runway is also creating high paying jobs and FAU graduates have some of the highest starting salaries in the state,” said President-Designate Negron. “We also had the opportunity to meet with faculty and administrators to discuss how they have increased their academic requirements for enrollment and are working to improve their four-year graduation rate. I believe finding a good job that leads to a fulfilling career is an important goal of every person who investments in a college education. Our discussion on FAU’s successful efforts to link education to jobs was a great way to end our tour.”
Senator Maria Sachs (D-Delray Beach) accompanied President-Designate Negron on his visit to FAU.
“We are thrilled Senators Negron and Sachs visited our College of Business,” said FAU President John Kelly. “It was a great opportunity to showcase the College of Business’ nationally-acclaimed programs and show why FAU was named a top-performing university in the state this year by the Florida Board of Governors.”
President Kelly spoke with the senators about the initiatives the school has developed to ensure student success and rise in the rankings. This lead to a detailed conversation about FAU’s appreciative advising program that focuses on ensuring advising services aggressively reach out to students to ensure they have the information they need to plot a course for timely graduation.
The final stop on the tour was an informal conversation with several College of Business students focused on their studies and their thoughts on their job prospects.
With an eye toward the 2017 and 2018 legislative sessions, Sen. Negron has made higher education in the state of Florida one of his top priorities.
