FAU Celebrates MLK Day with Series of Events
Florida Atlantic University will hold a series of events in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day from Monday, Jan. 18 through Jan. 21.
The 2016 MLK Diversity Address, “Advancing the Dream Together,” will examine social justice issues that impact daily lives and focus on dismantling years of inequalities.
Florida Atlantic University will hold a series of events in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day from Monday, Jan. 18 through Jan. 21. The events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road, and are sponsored by FAU’s Division of Student Affairs.
The events are as follows:
MLK Day of Service
Monday, Jan. 18 at 9 a.m.
Live Oak Pavilion, FAU Student Union
FAU students and staff will learn the importance of giving back by participating in community service activities at organizations such as the Homeless Coalition and In Jacob’s Shoes.
Tunnel Vision
Tuesday, Jan. 19; Wednesday, Jan. 20; and Thursday, Jan. 21; all sessions at 9 a.m.
Majestic Palm Room, Student Union
Tunnel Vision is an immersion program that allows FAU students, faculty and staff to walk through scenarios of oppression and injustices. A banner will be placed at the end of the tunnel where participants can sign a peace pledge.
MLK Diversity Address with Tim Wise
Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Live Oak Pavilion, Student Union
The 2016 MLK Diversity Address, “Advancing the Dream Together,” will examine social justice issues that impact daily lives and focus on dismantling years of inequalities. The speech will be simulcast to partner campuses. Receptions and panel discussions will follow at each location.
Candlelight Vigil & Campus March
Thursday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m.
Student Union Circle Drive
A silent march around FAU’s Boca Raton campus will offer participants the opportunity to reflect on past and present social justice issues. The march will begin with a speaker and candlelight vigil.
