Applications for the MFA program must be submitted completely online through the Graduate College website.

No Spring or Summer admissions

Application requirements:
- Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university
- GPA of 3.0

Statement of intent

An essay describing background, creative aims, and reasons for pursuing an MFA at FAU (500 - 750 words)


Portfolio - Graphic Design

A portfolio of visual work is required from all applicants to the MFA in Graphic Design. In addition to academic and professional work, applicants are encouraged to include examples of personal work. Minimum number of items: 15 Maximum number of items: 20. Follow instructions on GradCas to submit a portfolio.

The portfolio should give the MFA selection committee enough knowledge of how you think as a designer and your potential of being successful in our program. Your work should demonstrate your skills and experience in typography, editorial design, interactive, brand identity, and other areas of graphic design. It can be a combination of student work, professional (client) work, and self-initiated projects (personal work), that reflects your thinking and ambitions as a designer.


Portfolio - Studio Art

A portfolio of visual work is required from all applicants to the MFA in Studio Art. Include a minimum of 20 (maximum 24) digital images presenting an overview of your work. Applications for painting must include a minimum of 2 detail views. Include information about each piece (title, dimensions, materials.) Follow instructions on GradCas to submit a portfolio. 


CV/Resume (1-3 pages) 


Official transcript(s). Graduate applicants who completed all or part of their education abroad are required to have their foreign credentials evaluated. FAU will do the evaluation or it must be done by a NACES member. The evaluation through FAU takes at least 10 business days to be completed. More information here.


Three letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters should be written by teachers or other professionals who have firsthand knowledge of your academic achievements and can comment on your potential for graduate study.

English Language Proficiency Exam. TOEFL score of 500 or IBT of 61; IELTS 6.0; Duolingo 90
