Peter & The Starcatcher

A Play By: Rick Elice

Based on the novel by Dave Barry & Ridley Pearson

with Music by Wayne Parker

Originally produced on Broadway by Nancy Nagel Gibbs, Greg Schaffert, Eva Price, Tom Smedes, and Disney Theatrical Productions.

Director's Note

Peter and the Starcatcher is based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson and was adapted for the stage by Rick Elice. The characters and events in the story provide the backdrop and serve as a prequel to J. M. Barrie’s’1904 staged play Peter Pan, Or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up . His expanded 1911 novel of Peter and Wendy went on to gain international fame.

Peter and the Starcatcher began its journey at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2009, opened Off-Broadway in 2011, and then transferred to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and opened on Broadway on April 15, 2012, and closed on January 20, 2013.

The play was nominated for 5 NYC Drama Desk Awards and Nine Tony Awards, winning the categories of: Best Set Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Sound Design and Best Actor. Ben Brantley of the NY Times in his 2012 production review stated:

“The extravagantly resourceful ensemble members of Peter and the Starcatcher have almost nothing in the way of modern machinery to support their sky-scraping journeys. On the contrary, there’s little here that couldn’t be found in a theater 150 years ago. What they do have is some ordinary rope, a couple of ladders, a few household appliances, two toy boats, and, most importantly, one another. And they have you, dear theatergoer, because in this ecstatic production, you’re as important a part of this process as they are”.

The development of this type of actor-audience connection was my touchstone in staging our production here at FAU. We purposefully strove to find places to break the 4th wall, beyond those stated in the script in our production and I asked the actors to engage in their physicality to help them enhance their sense of play and danger (without being dangerous) to better establish the world of this play.

This story, for me, is dark. It is not the ‘happy Peter Pan’, with pointy caps and green tights (though you will see some funky hats). There is joy in the story, but it is coupled with the pain of abandonment, alienation and fart jokes. I equate the world of the play to the playground when the sun has set but night has not yet fallen. What was fun when we were children is now dark, the shadows have grown long. The environment is a bit uneasy and quite possibly dangerous. When you were a kid, it was the time the teenagers came out and took over the playground and the park was different now. This is what the show is for me. It is full of frivolity, violence, laughter, first love, physical mutilation and song all lend a hand 😊 in creating an inter-laced world that we all know and simultaneously forgotten in each repeating moment. It is like a favorite song that we hum the tune and don’t quite recall all the lyrics.

I do so hope you enjoy the show and I would like to leave you with what J.M. Barrie, says, “On these magic shores children at play are forever beaching their coracles (boats made of whicker). We too have been there; we can still hear the sound of the surf, though we shall land no more.” – from Peter Pan
