Director's Note

“Sometimes chaos is good. It’s how new things get discovered”

I’m honored and privileged to direct this incredible, dedicated group of students in Firebringer .

The creation of this musical followed an untraditional path. Firebringer was never on Broadway. It was created by a production company called Starkid Productions, a musical theatre company founded in 2009 at the University of Michigan. They were originally a student group and found viral success with their first musical, A Very Potter Musical . StarKid distributes their musicals for free on YouTube, with recent projects being funded by Kickstarter and physical ticket sales.

Starkid Productions played a pivotal role in so many theatre students’ lives. It allowed so many of us to watch full theatrical productions for free on YouTube. Since the success of A Very Potter Musical , the group has produced thirteen stage musicals, three national tours, two reunion concert specials, a concert in London, and many more theatrical endeavors.

I’ve found so much joy through this process watching the students build their confidence, find artistic choices, and also thrive performing in a piece that played a pivotal role in our love of theatre.

Thank you all for sharing this journey with us. Praise the all-powerful duck!
