I hope everyone had a pleasant summer. I’d especially like to welcome the newest Owls who are attending their very first classes this week at Florida Atlantic University, and the more than 80 new faculty members who joined our staff. We have a number of Weeks of Welcome events planned to help students get back into the swing of campus life. Click here for information about the upcoming events.
Diversity and inclusion are deeply embedded in this university’s roots, and I am incredibly proud that FAU is one of the most racially diverse universities in the country. In fact, our strategic plan for the university includes four platforms specifically designed to encourage a spirit of civility and mutual respect: Community Engagement; Global Perspectives; Diversity; and Peace, Justice and Human Rights.
Universities and their surrounding communities have always been considered places for free speech and assembly, but racism, bigotry and violence will not be tolerated at FAU. I strongly condemn the acts of hatred recently displayed in Charlottesville. I am confident that the FAU family will continue to stand together in celebration of our differences and foster a safe and inclusive environment for students, faculty and staff regardless of race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender or sexual orientation.
Next Friday marks the start of football season, and I’d love to see everyone out there cheering on our team and new coaching staff under the direction of Head Coach Lane Kiffin. We expect a great season starting Friday, Sept. 1, when we host the U.S. Naval Academy. Game days are always filled with excitement, so please come out and support the Owls, and let’s show our opposition a heart-felt, respectful FAU welcome. An exciting year lies ahead and I hope that everyone will make the most it – engage in research, seek out new experiences, dedicate yourself to learning, and of course, have fun.
Welcome back, and Go Owls!
