Over the weekend, the No. 29 ranked FAU baseball team was named the Conference USA Regular Season champions. It’s their second regular season title since 2016 and their sixth regular season title overall. The team’s 22-8 conference record is the most wins earned in league play since 2003.
This was an exciting season for the Owls, which included wins over nationally ranked Miami and Florida, and saw four players earned conference weekly honors, including third baseman Joe Montes, second baseman Francisco Urbaez, and outfielder Andru Summerall, who were named C-USA Hitter of the Week; and Mike Ruff, who received Pitcher of the Week honors.
Additionally, Head Coach John McCormack was inducted into the Palm Beach County Hall of Fame and catcher Pedro Pages was named a semifinalist for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award. Pitcher Zach Schneider is a candidate for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award and a finalist for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award for college baseball, which recognizes notable achievements in community, classroom, character and competition.
Next, the team heads to the Conference USA Championship tournament in Biloxi, Mississippi. The top-seeded Owls will face No. 8 seed UTSA, at 5 p.m. on May 22. I am so very proud of the baseball team’s history of excellence, and I wish them the very best of luck in the conference tournament. Go Owls!
