The Florida Atlantic University softball team won their second Conference USA regular season title in three years over the weekend! The Owls ended the regular season with a 28-24 overall record and a 15-8 conference record.
A number of players contributed to the team’s success this year. Shortstop Emily Lochten leads the conference in runs scored with 52 and doubles with 22. Her other accolades include: Conference USA Player of the Week on April 30, two-time All C-USA First Team selection, and Third Team NFCA All-American – just the third player in program history to earn All-American honors. Prior to the start of this season, she was one of 50 players named to the Preseason Watch List for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award and was named Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year.
Catcher Alex Miller and outfielder Madisyn Palmer joined Emily on the preseason All-Conference team. Alex recently was named FAU’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year and Undergraduate Researcher of the Year for the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. Madisyn leads the conference in stolen bases, with 46. Pitcher Sloan Hammons leads the conference in hits allowed (8) and runs allowed (4) and pitcher Kara Lokeinsky leads with doubles allowed (1). The team also leads the conference in batting average (.303).
Next, the Owls will head to Charlotte, N.C. for the Conference USA Championship Tournament, to play for the postseason crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. As the tournament’s No. 1 seed, FAU automatically advances to the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 10. The team will play either Marshall, WKU or Louisiana Tech. Congratulations to Coach Joan Joyce and the team, and Go Owls!
