This week, FAU hosted the 48th annual Honors Convocation to recognize the University's most outstanding students and faculty members. One of the highlights of the ceremony is a keynote speech by the Distinguished Teacher of the Year. This is one of the most prestigious awards that a faculty member can receive, because the winner is selected exclusively by students in a four-month-long process.
The 2017 Distinguished Teacher of the Year award was presented to Darin Trelka, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of Integrated Medical Science in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Dr. Trelka is a board-certified anatomic and forensic pathologist who has served more than a decade as a medical examiner. His interview with the student selection committee consisted of a crime scene investigation, in which he taught students from a variety of backgrounds and levels to think critically, as medical examiners, in order to solve the case.
Other awards presented at Honors Convocation include the University Scholars and Undergraduate Researchers of the Year, as well as the first annual Presidential Awards for Engaged Faculty. Click here for a full list of award recipients.
Congratulations to all of our honorees! We are extremely proud of these outstanding Owls and appreciate their dedication to service and academic excellence.
