Hello from the New Owl on the Block

Greetings to everyone in Owl Country from the newest Owl! I’m John Kelly, and this is my first day as the president of Florida Atlantic University. I’m very proud to be here and eager to work with all of you to build the future of this dynamic young institution. I sought the presidency of FAU because I consider it to be the most exciting university in America, with a great track record of success and tremendous potential to excel in a host of new ways. I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible during my first 100 days in office.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’ve been at Clemson University for the past 28 years, working in a variety of capacities on the faculty and in the administration. Most recently, I served as vice president for economic development, which made me responsible for Clemson’s effectiveness in contributing to the viability of South Carolina’s economy. I provided oversight for 12 campuses and centers and helped launch some major new ventures including the Energy Systems Innovation Center, which is the world’s largest wind turbine drivetrain testing facility and first-of-its-kind smart grid simulator. I also headed a statewide agency based at Clemson that delivers a wide range of public service programs in all 46 South Carolina counties. My experiences at Clemson taught me the importance of making big plans and working with people both inside and outside the university to bring those plans to fruition. I’m already thinking of some exciting advances that we can pursue together.

Last Thursday, I packed a UHaul truck and made the 10-hour drive from Clemson to Boca Raton. I’m looking forward to living in the Baldwin House with my wife and children. They’ll be joining me as soon as the school year ends. We’re all delighted to be joining the FAU family, and you can be sure that you’ll be seeing us at many events. Go Owls!
