FAU to Host Events in Honor of LGBT History Month

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate LGBT History Month with a series of events for students and staff beginning Monday, Oct. 1 through Wednesday, Oct. 31 at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses. The events are free and open to the public.

The following events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:

Queer Coffee Hour: LGBTQ+ Dating Violence
Monday, Oct. 1 from noon to 1 p.m.
Glades Park Towers Multipurpose Room

Queer Coffee Hour isan opportunity for LGBTQ+ students and allies to explore and discuss topics related to identity and inclusion.

Drag 101
Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Sago Palm Room, Student Union

Experienced drag artist’s Ariel Rimm and Rianna Petrone provide a real time before and after transformation process. Drag culture and its profound impact on gender expression also will be discussed.

Clothesline Project      
Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.       
SO Lawn 

This event allows attendees to decorate a T-shirt with artful messages against sexual assault.

Safe Zone Ally Training 
Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Owls Care Classroom

The Safe Zone Ally Training Program educates students on issues relating to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ+) community and fosters allies throughout FAU’s campus. The goal of Safe Zone is to create a safe and inclusive campus environment for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Coming Out Monologues        
Thursday, Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
Student Union House Chambers

Coming out Monologues will be an open forum for participants to share coming out experiences through storytelling, spoken word, song, dance, or in whichever medium they express themselves best.

Sunday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The goal of Safe Zone is to create a safe and inclusive campus environment for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Annual Drag Show
Saturday, Oct. 27 at 9 p.m.
Student Union, Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium

FAU’s annual drag show exposes participants to Drag Culture and its history. Locally known artists preform drag theatrically in an environment that promotes inclusion and awareness of issues affecting the LGBTQ community.

Coming Out Workshop
Monday, Oct. 10 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
HE-713 

Join the conversation about theory and on how to support a family member or friend who may be coming out or is struggling to find their identity. This workshop explores the process and challenges of coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

National Coming Out Day: Coming Out Workshop
Thursday, Oct. 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Davie Student Union, Oasis Lounge 

This workshop explores the process and challenges of coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and how to give support to a friend or family member that would like to “come out.”

Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
The Burrow

Come out to the Burrow to learn about the Gender Unicorn and create your own stuffed unicorn. This event is free to all FAU students.
