FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science to Dedicate its Green Building

BOCA RATON, FL (November 3, 2010) – Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science will host its grand opening of its new facility on Friday, November 5 at 4 p.m. at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.

The 97,000-square-foot facility is the first, newly constructed academic building in southeast Florida to be designed and built to U.S. Green Building Council LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum level standards, the highest level in the Green Building Rating System.

The building will serve as a center of learning for FAU and its surrounding community, geared toward increasing the understanding of energy efficient technology while providing a model of sustainability. Unique characteristics of the building include a server room where waste heat is captured to control water temperatures for the chilled beam system; high-efficiency lighting systems partnered with solar hot water heating and a 54 KW photovoltaic array; highly reflective “cool roofs” which reduce solar heat gain to the building’s interior, reducing cooling requirements; and a roof garden that exhibits native plants irrigated with condensation from the air conditioning system.

Press seating and tours of the building will be available.  For additional information, contact Marc Kozlin at 561-297-1399 or mkozlin1@fau.edu, or Lisa Metcalf at 561-297-3022 or lmetcalf@fau.edu.
