FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science to Host Third Annual Pumpkin Drop

BOCA RATON, FL (October 28, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s department of physics and the Society of Physics Students in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science will host its third annual Pumpkin Drop on Friday, October 30 at 12:45 p.m. on the lawn west of the Science and Engineering Building, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

Physics professors will drop both hollow and filled pumpkins from the roof of the Science & Engineering building to demonstrate common physics principles such as constant acceleration of gravity, terminal velocity and Newton’s Laws.  Aristotle, Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein will explain the theories behind these principles.

The Pumpkin Drop will be preceded at 10:30 a.m. with a Physics Carnival for children hosted by graduate and undergraduate physics students.  Games include a rocket ring toss, Einstein ball throw, planet game and fishbowl frenzy.  Carnival prizes will be awarded.

FAU students also will be able to buy three balls for $1 to throw at their favorite physics professors hovering above the dunk tank.  All proceeds will go to the Society of Physics Students.
