FAU's Symphony Orchestra Opens a New Season of Music

BOCA RATON (September 25, 2008) – The department of music in the School of the Arts in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will open the 08-09 season with a concert of Russian, Hungarian and Finnish music presented by the FAU Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, October 12 at 3 p.m. in the University Theatre on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. Admission is free, though a donation is requested.

The concert will open with the fiery overture from the Russian opera Russlan and Ludmilla, composed by Mikhail Glinka.  It will be followed by a folk dance from another Russian opera, “Gopak,” from The Fair at Sorochinski, which was left incomplete by Modest Mussorgsky   and orchestrated by Anatol Liadov.  The first half will close with Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major composed by the Hungarian master, Franz Liszt, featuring FAU’s Professor Leonid Treer on piano.  After intermission, the concert will conclude with Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’s   Symphony No. 2, Op. 43 in D Major.

Leonid Treer, who was born in the former Soviet Union, has performed throughout the former USSR, Europe, Israel, the United States, Australia and the People’s Republic of China as a soloist chamber musician. The Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Laura Joella, who is the director of orchestral studies at FAU.   She is also the music director/conductor of New England Music Summer Camp’s concert orchestra in Sidney, Maine.
