FAU Hosts Human Powered Submarine Presentation

FAU Team Placed First and Second in 10th International Submarine Race

           
            BOCA RATON, FL (August 24, 2009) –
 Florida Atlantic University’s Human Powered Submarine Team will host a presentation and slideshow on the 10 th International Submarine Race that was held at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock, Maryland over the summer.  The team placed first for speed and second in the overall competition.  The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Wednesday, August 26 at 10 a.m. at the Student Union lobby, located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. The submarine that the team designed and built will be on display.

“Success requires motivation and effort, and the FAU team has demonstrated it all,” said Edgar An, professor of ocean and mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

George Valdes and Joe Alderton, the FAU-Boat co-captains and FAU students, will lead the presentation.  An, and the student team members, Shawn Wilt, Skyler Bryan, Jason McCullough, Danielle Kolber, Charlotte George and Everett Jones, will be available to answer questions.

The 21-team competition included teams from Texas A&M University, Virginia Tech, University of Maine, University of Maryland, University of Washington and University Michigan, as well as teams from Canada, England, Venezuela and the private sponsors. The races were originally launched by FAU Ocean Engineering in 1989 off the Riviera Beach coast. Later, the competition was moved to the Maryland site.
