FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters Recognizes Top Students and Faculty
BOCA RATON, FL (May 4, 2007) – Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters recognized outstanding students, faculty and staff at the College’s Ninth Annual Awards Celebration held on Friday, April 20 on the FAU Boca Raton campus. The event was also an occasion to recognize donors who have given to the College’s many departments and programs.
Over 200 students received scholarships and honors for excellence in a variety of fields. Prizes were awarded for excellence in art, music and theatre and for accomplishment in anthropology, classical studies, history, Holocaust and Jewish studies, women’s studies and other areas. Some new awards this year included the “William Jerald Kennedy Faculty Award for an Outstanding Anthropology Student,” which was awarded in recognition of a former faculty member; the “Bar Charts-Joanne Jackson Memorial Scholarship in Graphic Arts,” which was established through the generosity of John and Bobbie Ford of BarCharts, Inc. of Boca Raton; and the “Marion Kofman Art Scholarship and the Ethel Farrington Smith Letters Award,” presented by the Boca Raton Branch of the National League of American Pen Women. There were also several new music scholarships provided by three local music organizations including the Jazz Arts Music Society, the Swing and Jazz Preservation Society and the Music Society of Coral Lakes.
Other donors recognized at the event were Frances Edelman for her support of several awards throughout the College; Sylvia Rosen for her support of the ceramics program in the department of visual arts and art history; Claire Dorst and the Delray Beach Art League for their support of visual arts and art history; and Il Circolo for their support of Italian studies.
Faculty awards went to Gina Carreno, instructor, department of sociology, for the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and Prisca Augustyn, assistant professor, department of languages, linguistics and literacies, for the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.
