FAU’s Lifelong Learning Society to Host Conference
on Governance, Arms Control and Security in the Middle East

            BOCA RATON, FL (April 10, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University’s Lifelong Learning Society will host a special conference focusing on various topics, including “U.S. National Security Strategy and the Mid-East Policy,” “American Civil-Military Relations” and “Dealing with Mid-East Weapons of Mass Destruction.”   The conference will be held on Saturday, April 12 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Barry and Florence Friedberg Auditorium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

            Dr. John H. Johns, retired brigadier general and professor of political science at the National Defense University at Fort McNair, will discuss “U.S. National Security Strategy and the Mid-East Policy.” Johns served as a combat arms officer in the Army for more than 26 years, then continued to serve as a deputy assistant secretary of defense in the Department of Defense before retirement.

            Colonel William Locke Hauser will speak on “American Civil-Military Relations.” After his retirement as a U.S. Army officer, Hauser continues to remain involved with the military as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a fellow of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces & Society, and as a consultant on officer development to the Department of Defense. He graduated from and taught at West Point.

            Dr. Jeffrey S. Morton, professor of political science at FAU, will moderate and speak about “Dealing with Mid-East Weapons of Mass Destruction.” Morton holds a doctorate in international relations from the University of South Carolina, is author of three books and many journal articles, and has taught at FAU since 1994.
