Graduate Student Success

By, Tulasi Acharya, Ph.D. student, Public Administration

As a graduate student, there are many challenges you might encounter. For instance, if you are a graduate assistant (GA) or teaching assistant (TA), you have to balance your workload, which includes both your assignments as a GA/TA and your coursework. This will, at times, be challenging. On top of that, you have your personal life.

As an international graduate student and also a TA, I have more challenges than most graduate students. Those challenges include keeping abreast of my coursework, being responsible to my TA assignments, and trying to adjust to a different culture while missing my family back home. However, I never let that deter me. Rather, I use this as a creative force to energize me, to envision my future, and move forward. Those forces gave me an opportunity to make many friends from different socio-cultural backgrounds and work hard on my studies, all while performing my TA duties. Thus, those factors helped make me more responsible, accountable, and also helped me see things from a different perspective. I am a Ph.D. candidate in Public Administration at FAU, and I am so proud of myself for what I am doing. It is all because of my willingness to accept those challenges. I really would like to help all graduate students understand that a career is not built by being deterred from life’s challenges, but from your willingness to accept them for the sake of personal and professional growth.
