FAU’s Boca Raton Campus (click here for the campus map) hosted the 8th Teaching with Technology Showcase on Saturday, April 9, 2016 in the College of Business building. More than 150 attendees (primarily FAU faculty) participated in sessions. Below information provides some materials from the presentations, as well as detailed information about the event schedule.

Welcome
Keynote - Internet of Things Jason Hallstrom is a Professor in FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science and Director of the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (ISENSE). ISENSE is an interdisciplinary research hub that tackles grand Dr. Hallstrom develops small wireless sensing devices, ranging in size from a dime to a matchbox, that collect information about the environment and transmit it to cloud-based computing systems that store, analyze, and present that information to educators, researchers, and decision-makers. Applied sensing and the emerging “Internet of Things” provide endless possibilities for making the ‘invisible’ visible, both in the small and in the large. Technologies are being developed for a broad spectrum of applications and uses, ranging from monitoring physiological changes in senior patients to support aging in place, to mitigating natural and manmade disasters, such as hurricanes and biological threats. Emergency management decisions can be optimized to quickly commit personnel and resources to where they are needed most. Dr. Hallstrom’s research is supported by the National Science Foundation. He is working on the next generation of his water monitoring device, "Eiffel," to illustrate how this unique device can capture a birds-eye-view of Florida and beyond. In the mobile era, the short, quickly composed message dominates, and immediate response to written messages is often crucial in a business context. This presentation explores the advantages and disadvantages of a mobile application for teaching writing, particularly business-oriented, time-sensitive messages. Examples of assignments and FAU student responses will be included. |

Accessibility in an Online Environment - From a Learner’s Perspective
The Center for eLearning showcases the online course experience from a visually impaired student’s perspective. The student will join the presenters to demonstrate the use of equipment and tools to access and navigate online courses. Suggestions will be offered to instructors on how to improve course interaction for all students. |

Simple as Click-2-3: Classroom Engagement with Padlet
This presentation explores Padlet, a free, easy-to-use online collaborative whiteboard that instructors of all levels can use to increase engagement and active learning in the classroom. Padlets are created by one person, who sets the rights, defines the privacy levels and layout, and provides editing rights to others. Content can be exported in a variety of formats and ways. |

Features and functions in Blackboard evolve constantly, but many of us are not aware of these changes. Blackboard is here and now in 2016, but our courses may still be in 2012. SurveyMonkey in the Classroom
SurveyMonkey enables students to use their phones to respond to in-class surveys. Student responses are used to drive course discussion. This methodology was used in a capital facility planning course to demonstrate public participation and build real-world planning scenarios, transforming lectures into practical participatory exercises. |

Empowering Rural Residents to Access Web-Based Patient Teaching Materials Using IPads
This presentation shares lessons learned from the trial use of IPADS and laptops to support efforts to introduce teaching technology to older rural, minority residents in “The Glades,” Florida, following hypertension and cognitive screenings. Ideas for research and health assessment are explored. |

Universal Design and
Discussion Board Forums: Using Writing Strategies, Rubrics, and Rules to Help Students Structure Online Discussion Board Posts
This poster explores the use of embedded writing strategies and teacher expectations to support a universal design approach to discussion boards that scaffold responses. This approach is especially helpful to those with disabilities who often have difficulty in unstructured writing environments, but it can improve student responses across the board.
Using Simulations in a Capstone Course Incorporating simulations into a large, virtual capstone business administration course enables students to integrate the knowledge they have acquired across their coursework with practice working as a virtual team. In this integrative course, students explore a total organizational perspective, developing vital hands-on experience that helps them meet the challenges of managing a business in the real world. |
