Effectively Integrating Games, Simulations, and Interactive Exercises into Fully Online Courses

Integrating effective active learning tools and methods into live courses is a difficult but important challenge for knowledge transfer and retention. Using Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard, this presentation demonstrates a succinct set of easy-to-incorporate ideas and tips to effectively integrate hands-on exercises, activities, and simulations into fully on-line courses.

Making New Instructional Waves by Enhancing Blackboard

Blackboard provides an easy means to deliver instruction, communicate with students, track student progress, and manage classroom material. Common technology tools enable us to enhance Blackboard to promote higher engagement with instructional material. The focus is on new tools available from the Center of eLearning to connect students to content and improving their success in your classes.

Leaping Forward with Enthusiasm! A Faculty Group Transitions to eLearning: An Intentional Collaborative Effort

Join in the adventures of a faculty group of digital immigrants as they design a cohesive online core group of five courses in an education master’s program. Grounded in faculty professional development literature, this program provides insight into working as a team to meet quality design goals. Participants can share personal experiences and reflect on how a collaborative program development might work for them.

This presentation provides background on the recent interest in software-assisted essay grading and explores opportunities to use easily accessible software systems to aid in the analysis and grading of student essays.

Flipped Classrooms for Preservice Teachers
Michelle Vaughan

This presentation highlights the construction and implementation of a flipped classroom using Blackboard tools such as Collaborate, discussion boards, and announcements. Particular attention is paid to the management strategies needed to make this a successful instructional strategy and discussion about the impact on the “in-class” portion of the flipped model.

The Benefits of Enhanced e-Books
Jeannine Burgess

Learn about the different types of e-books and e-book formats used to create books that will work correctly on Mobile devices. A brief demonstration will show how an e-book is developed using interactive assessments, videos, and links. Participants will discuss strategies for using and constructing interactive multi-touch e-books to increase student collaboration and engagement and to accommodate various learning styles.

Screencast-O-Matic: Easy Audio-Visual Instruction
Rachael Neu, Lauri Rebar, Alyse Ergood, Melissa Moore

Screencast-O-Matic, a free software program with a very-low-cost “Pro” version, can be used to share both captured computer screen information and webcam video (to personalize the message) to visually connect with an audience. Whether “on the fly” or as a dedicated screen capture program, this tool can be used to “flip your classroom” or simply supplement complex lessons. The presentation includes features and uses of Screencast-O-Matic and links to sample screencasts.

Asynchronous Online Tools and Techniques for Developing Students’ Presentation Skills

Want to develop your students’ presentation skills while teaching a fully on-line course? This session demonstrates video software and the Blackboard tools to create individual or group presentations. It also shares tips for demonstrating the same delivery skills required in face-to-face presentations and ideas for questions and answers, peer feedback, and self-reflection.

The FAU Libraries’ electronic resources librarian offers an insider’s view of an online library. Learn about electronic resource pricing models and purchasing considerations, how the Libraries’ online collections work together, and quick fixes to common access problems.

To the Cloud and Beyond . . . An Excursion into Virtual Desktops

This presentation showcases the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) that is available for use within the College of Engineering and Computer Science and how that technology could be used in other colleges/departments.

Flipped Classroom Ideas
Mary Lou Duffy

Examples of both face-to-face sessions and online sessions of flipped classrooms provide the basis for discussing the when, how, and why of flipping the classroom. The goal of the session is to have audience members determine if flipping a class session is something that will work for their content and their teaching styles.

#CloudCrit : Inviting technology to the Visual Art and Design Critique Process
N Silas Munro

In academic circles “critique” is prevalent as a paper or form of argument or criticism. In visual art disciplines it is an event. Critiques, or “crits” for short, are often lengthy, extensive conversations and discussions about visual work. The general policy is that electronic devices and technology are not invited to the table. What if you turned that assumption on its head?

Experiences with Rancière and Biesta in Operations Management
Graeme Warren

Drawing on the recent award-winning research of Gert Biesta on a pedagogical strategy based on the philosophical work of Jacques Rancière and Joseph Jacotot, this talk describes experiences in online courses in operations management implementing this strategy. Students are given substantial latitude and responsibility (with high expectations) for introducing, engaging, and critiquing materials. The talk will conclude with reflections on the value of ontological concerns in the classroom and a discussion of connections to fostering of undergraduate research.

Online Course That Met the National Quality Matters Standards
Philomena Marinaccio

Dr. Marinaccio shares her online course pedagogy, which has met National Quality Matters standards. Her online course from the Department of Teaching and Learning utilizes the nontraditional approach of including her recorded lectures in her class design. She links Blackboard Collaborate lectures, Discussion thread assessments, and myriad other Blackboard tools to create each learning module.

Demos and Discussions - High Performance Computing and Visualization
Rhian Resnick & Eric Borenstein

The high performance computing team will demonstrate two technologies. Remote linux workstations and a visualization wall. Through the use of remote controls users will be able to interact with the visualization wall while watching remote desktop users experience parallel computing.
