Integrating effective active learning tools and methods into live courses is a difficult but important challenge for knowledge transfer and retention. Using Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard, this presentation demonstrates a succinct set of easy-to-incorporate ideas and tips to effectively integrate hands-on exercises, activities, and simulations into fully on-line courses.

Particular attention is paid to the management strategies needed to make this a successful instructional strategy and discussion about the impact on the “in-class” portion of the flipped model.

The Benefits of Enhanced e-Books

Learn about the different types of e-books and e-book formats used to create books that will work correctly on Mobile devices. A brief demonstration will show how an e-book is developed using interactive assessments, videos, and links. Participants will discuss strategies for using and constructing interactive multi-touch e-books to increase student collaboration and engagement and to accommodate various learning styles.

Screencast-O-Matic: Easy Audio-Visual Instruction

Screencast-O-Matic, a free software program with a very-low-cost “Pro” version, can be used to share both captured computer screen information and webcam video (to personalize the message) to visually connect with an audience. Whether “on the fly” or as a dedicated screen capture program, this tool can be used to “flip your classroom” or simply supplement complex lessons. The presentation includes features and uses of Screencast-O-Matic and links to sample screencasts.

#CloudCrit : Inviting technology to the Visual Art and Design Critique Process

In academic circles “critique” is prevalent as a paper or form of argument or criticism. In visual art disciplines it is an event. Critiques, or “crits” for short, are often lengthy, extensive conversations and discussions about visual work. The general policy is that electronic devices and technology are not invited to the table. What if you turned that assumption on its head?

Experiences with Rancière and Biesta in Operations Management

Drawing on the recent award-winning research of Gert Biesta on a pedagogical strategy based on the philosophical work of Jacques Rancière and Joseph Jacotot, this talk describes experiences in online courses in operations management implementing this strategy. Students are given substantial latitude and responsibility (with high expectations) for introducing, engaging, and critiquing materials. The talk will conclude with reflections on the value of ontological concerns in the classroom and a discussion of connections to fostering of undergraduate research.

Online Course That Met the National Quality Matters Standards

Dr. Marinaccio shares her online course pedagogy, which has met National Quality Matters standards. Her online course from the Department of Teaching and Learning utilizes the nontraditional approach of including her recorded lectures in her class design. She links Blackboard Collaborate lectures, Discussion thread assessments, and myriad other Blackboard tools to create each learning module.

Demos and Discussions - High Performance Computing and Visualization

The high performance computing team will demonstrate two technologies. Remote linux workstations and a visualization wall. Through the use of remote controls users will be able to interact with the visualization wall while watching remote desktop users experience parallel computing.
