WATCH: Our Second “Community Conversation” on Domestic Violence
Thursday, Dec 03, 2020Thank you to the students, faculty, staff, and friends in the community who joined us for our second “Community Conversations: An Illuminating Discussion Series at the Intersection of Social Work and Criminal Justice”.
Marianna Colvin, Ph.D., LCSW, dean’s fellow for research and academic effectiveness in the College of Social Work & Criminal Justice, opened the event with a warm welcome and overview of our college, which was followed by an introduction of the evening’s panelists by Heather Thompson, Ph.D., LCSW, interim director of the Phyllis & Harvey Sandler School of Social Work.
Our guest panelists included Emily Janas, Women in Distress education and prevention manager; Danielle Liberal, Women in Distress teen dating violence specialist; and Linda Laviano, victim witness counselor at the Broward County State Attorney’s Office. The conversation focused on the role of social work and criminal justice in domestic violence work, the protections available for domestic violence survivors, and important warning signs that you or someone you know may be in a domestic violence situation. The event wrapped up with thought-provoking questions from the audience, fielded by Sara Dochterman, LCSW, associate director of the Sandler School.
The motto of our discussion series is “when we know better, we can do better”. We sincerely thank our expert panelists for sharing their stories and showing all of us the many ways social workers and criminal justice professionals are working in solidarity to effect positive change.
We hope you will make plans to join us for our next “Community Conversation” in early 2021. Details coming soon.
