Offices in the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management hosted Social Justice Week in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day the week concluded with the 4th Annual WeLead: Diversity Matters Student Leadership Symposium with a record breaking participation of over 300 students. 

WeLead was advocated by our student body asking to have a conference with a focus on diversity. WeLead is a one-day experience that aims to broaden participants’ cultural fluency while also promoting informed and effective social justice advocacy. 

The keynote speaker for the day was Dr. Jacqueline Battalora a Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice from Saint Xavier University. The speaker brought a perspective of history that is aligned with the creation of race and importance of not discriminating. Throughout the day students where met with many different engaging breakout sessions on topics such as:

 

Sorry, Not Sorry: Women’s Leadership and Assertive Speak 

LaNita Gregory Campbell and Francine Coker 

This session will featured two women in leadership roles discussing valuable leadership skill sets, while also breaking down common stereotypes. Participants will gained an understanding of their own leadership style through confidence building activities and positive characteristics of an effective leader. 

 

Owning Your Privilege 

Dre Johnson 

Dre Johnson and peers participated in an interactive discussion about how one’s own privilege can affect the many ways in which they go about in society, such as: being able to engage in certain conversations or activities without the feeling of worrisome. They took part and shared in their own voice in the courageous conversation about race and identity.
