Developing Leadership Skills at FAU

What makes up a good leader? The answer to this question varies on who you ask, but if there is one thing that is clear, it is that the ability to lead effectively relies on a number of key skills. But that also differs, as many leaders have different characteristics and styles. In fact, there is not one right way to lead in all circumstances, but one of the main characteristics of a good leader is their ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
But why is it important to develop leadership skills? When sitting down with Juan Izaguirre, Director of the Office of Leadership Education And Development or LEAD, Izaguirre expressed that in today’s world we need more leaders that have the “desire to create change, in something that they are passionate about, rather than just following a trend.”
College is a perfect time to learn and develop leadership skills that can be applied to in the workforce, and in life. Many of the skills of a great leader, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, can be practiced vastly in college. The Office of LEAD, offer a variety of opportunities for students to get involved and learn about leadership skills, strategies, and community service. This weekend, a two-part conference will take place. iDiscover will be held on Friday, and the iLead Student Leadership Conference will take place on Saturday in the Student Union. Students will get to participate in a variety of meaningful experiences promoting self-awareness as a leader through the theme “I am the Change.”
This weekend of self leadership exploration is free for FAU students. The conference includes popular keynote speakers, breakout sessions and opportunities to engage with peers, faculty, staff, and more. Izaguirre hopes that this weekend can supply FAU students with a “glimpse of what a conference is like and a drive to nourish the leadership soul within them.” “Our event planning, elaboration, and creativity are focused on you, the student. We offer programs that are meant to build you into a stronger and more resonant leader.”
The LEAD office works closely with FAU Career Center to promote the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) career readiness competencies identified by employers as most often sought in future employees. One of those is “leadership.” Defined by NACE, a person who demonstrates leadership in the workforce is “one who can assess and manage his/her emotions and those of others; use empathetic skills to guide and motivate; and organize, prioritize, and delegate work.”
