Application Preparation Program for Medical School Offered for Pre-Health Students at FAU

The  Schmidt College of Science's Pre-Health Professions Office  is pleased to offer pre-medical and pre-dental students with an intensive  Application Preparation for Pre-Health Students  (APPS) program for students who will be applying in the current cycle. 

The program is designed to help highly motivated students learn how to showcase their abilities, skills and motivation throughout the application process to medical or dental school. Students receive hands-on individual support during the 9-day APPS program.

FAU alumnus, Pierce Herrmann, a 2021 Biological Chemistry major from Florida Atlantic University’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, completed the APPS program in Spring 2022.

“Applying to medical school is very confusing,” said Herrmann. “The program allowed me to be in a classroom with people who know the application process, and I could get real-life help and support — from how to input your transcript to help with interview prep and even your personal statement. The advisors in the Pre-Health Office were extremely helpful.” 

Participants of the APPS program will have the opportunity to network with like-minded students who are also ready to apply. Some highlights of the program include comprehensive AMCAS/ACOMAS overview, personal statement workshops, mock interviews and interview skill evaluation, one-on-one faculty and staff interaction and tours of local medical and dental programs.

“The APPS program gives you advice from experienced professionals who have done this before,” said Herrmann. “They provide real-life support such as when to apply and when to take the MCAT, they and give you exposure to other med schools and admissions staff.” 

Students who are interested in participating in the APPS program must have a minimum of 60 hours of earned college credit (required), a minimum 3.4 overall GPA, and have completed the pre-health course required for medical school. Students who are accepted in the APPS program will be ready to apply for the upcoming cycle.

“Gina Jones in the Pre-Health Office was great throughout the whole process,” said Herrmann. “She gave great advice, and she was there for me even after the course was over.”

Herrmann has received numerous acceptances to medical school programs across the country. Currently, he is working as a medical scribe and assistant for a local ophthalmology office, while maintaining his own photography business, which he launched at age 15, and is supporting local philanthropic causes. In his spare time, Herrmann also enjoys scuba diving.

APPS is offered annually every spring, and the 2023 program will take place May 8-12 (in-person/hybrid) and May 22 - November 16 (interview sessions).
