Ph.D. Student Ganesh Shiwakoti Explores the Mathematical Foundation of AI to Advance Health Care Solutions

Mathematics and statistics Ph.D. student Ganesh Shiwakoti is studying the mathematical foundation of artificial intelligence (AI). He intends to apply this knowledge to advance health care solutions within the medical AI industry.
“My research has the potential to enhance the quality of care in all areas of medicine by making AI more reliable and to give AI the ability to explain itself,” explained Shiwakoti.
Shiwakoti earned his master's degree in mathematics from Tribhuvan University in Nepal before joining Florida Atlantic as a Ph.D. student in the fall of 2022. In addition to working with his supervisor William Hahn, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics and statistics, Schmidt College of Science, on medical image analysis using AI techniques in the Gruber AI Sandbox , he is also a graduate research assistant in the Sandbox.
"I assist with AI projects, manage the Sandbox, provide technical support, help organize AI-related events and conferences and coordinate with faculty members and the library to support interdisciplinary research and innovation," said Shiwakoti.
Shiwakoti holds regular office hours in the Sandbox, located inside the S.E. Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. His office hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at LY 103.
In addition, Shiwakoti also serves as the treasurer for the Florida Atlantic student chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). His anticipated graduation date is fall 2027.
