2018 Future Doctor's Reception
Friday, Jun 08, 2018Each spring the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science celebrates the achievements of its future doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, and physician assistants with the annual Future Doctor's Reception. Congratulations to the future doctors who began their journey here at FAU! Over 125 students, family, administrators, faculty, and staff were in attendance to help commemorate these young students' achievements on May 8, 2018.
Thanks to the College of Science Pre-Health Professions Office, who interviewed and assisted with over 100 applicants. Forty-two of those students will go on to attend medical schools across the nation, including New York University School of Medicine, University of Miami Miller College of Medicine, Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Florida Atlantic University, where twelve of our students were accepted into the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Click here to see photos from the event.
Special thanks to the seven committee members who assisted with the interview and application process: Dr. Stephen Locke, Chair, Marc Wharton Co-Chair, Dr. Colin Hughes, Dr. James Hartman, Dr. Georgios Kalantzis, Dr. Jo Ann Bamdas, Ms. Ama Agumeh, and Dr. James Jannotta. Special thanks also goes to the Pre-Health Professionals team, all of our Science Advising team, and staff who worked closely with the students and planned another memorable Future Doctor's Reception for this new class of students. Gina Johnson, Associate Director of Academic Programs, led the effort along with the Pre-Health team, which includes Latarsha Morgan, Carla Liranzo, Ana Botero, and Thabita Joseph.
Dean Ata Sarajedini remarks, "I’m proud of our students whose achievements have afforded them entry into an exciting, new chapter of their lives and academic careers. I’m proud when I think of the future and the impact they will make on the lives of others."
Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Evonne Rezler, echoes Dr. Sarajedini’s remarks, stating, “The Science Advising and Pre-Health offices did a wonderful job with the event. We are thrilled with the success of these outstanding FAU graduates.”
Dr. Ira Gelb, renowned board-certified cardiologist, who serves as FAU's Senior Academic Advisor for Pre-Baccalaureate Programs and Professor of Integrated Medical Science, had the pleasure of swearing in Colton Bielh, who was awarded the F. Edward Herbert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship with the United States Army.
We were fortunate enough to receive $2000 in donations to support this momentous event from Kaplan Test Prep, who donated a Kaplan MCAT prep course, as well as Dr. Jeff Berman and Kari Oeltjen.
As we begin this new chapter, we invite you to support the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. Your gift will support the students, faculty who propel student achievements, and our researchers who are creating tomorrow’s solutions. You may make your gift to any area of the college that you wish by donating online here .
