Alumna Spotlight: Sadelyn De Los Santos ‘15

Charles E. Schmidt College of Science alumna Sadelyn De Los Santos, B.S. ’15, MCMSc, PA-C, adored her time as an undergraduate at Florida Atlantic. Her incredible academic experience as a Biological Sciences student helped foster her love of learning and prepare her for future graduate studies and medical career.

“My experience as a College of Science student was incredible. I felt like I belonged,” expressed De Los Santos. “The program challenged me in all the ways that I needed to complete my graduate studies, but it also prepared me for the daily hurdles that I face as a medical provider. It also helped to build my character and shape me into the hardworking, diligent, and compassionate person that I am today.”

As part of her undergraduate studies, De Los Santos took Organic Chemistry with Evonne Rezler, Ph.D., senior associate dean for undergraduate studies, FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. More than once, she attended Dr. Rezler’s office hours.

“Dr. Rezler was patient with me and didn’t let me leave her office without ensuring that I understood the concepts I was struggling with,” shared De Los Santos. “I attribute my success in her class to her help and outstanding instruction.”

De Los Santos said she was also extremely grateful for the support and guidance of her former academic advisor, Elissa Castillo, in the Schmidt College of Science.

“She was extremely helpful in guiding me through my academic career, which in turn helped prepare me for physician assistant school,” said De Los Santos.

Today, De Los Santos works as a physician associate at Cardiac Electrophysiology in Boca Raton. Her responsibilities include helping diagnose and treat cardiac arrhythmias in her patients and program and test their cardiac devices. Additionally, she treats patients who suffer from neurocardiogenic syncope — a condition that leads to fainting due to a sudden drop in a person’s heart rate and blood pressure.

She said she feels that the most rewarding part about her job is being able to build and foster relationships with her patients, and especially to ease, heal, and comfort those who struggle with debilitating and life-threatening conditions.

As a former Owl, De Los Santos offered some inspirational advice for current Schmidt College of Science students: “Do not let obstacles hinder you from achieving all that you are capable of,” she stated. “Instead, let the challenges motivate you to become even better. I encourage everyone to never give up because the best is yet to come. You just have to believe in yourself!”
