Phillip DeYoung, Ph.D. '03
Senior Clinical Research Scientist Phil received his bachelor’s degree in biological science from Florida State University. He later enrolled in the graduate program here at FAU in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Phil was mentored by Dr. Ram Narayanan and focused his research on bioinformatics-based discovery of novel cancer genes. Together, they published 6 peer-reviewed papers and established the first microarray core facility in the state of Florida. In 2003, Phil was the second person to receive his PhD from the Department of Chemistry. He then took a position as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and worked in the lab of Dr. Leif Ellisen at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. There he studied the molecular tumorigenesis of head and neck cancers and discovered a novel molecular mechanism for hypoxia signaling. After his postdoctoral training, Phil joined the Oncology R&D group at GlaxoSmithKline where he is currently a Senior Clinical Research Scientist in the Cell and Gene Therapy group. Phil has 20 years of experience in cancer research and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and reviews in cancer journals. Outside of science, Phil’s passions are his family, faith, sports, the outdoors, and serving in his community |
Andrew Duffell, MBA '15
President Duffell’s international background and multiple economic development roles have shaped his forward-thinking and problem-solving approach regarding the development of South Florida’s economy using technology as a catalyst. Since becoming president & CEO of the Research Park at FAU in 2011 the Research Park’s contribution to the region’s economy has surged, largely due to the repositioning efforts Duffell has implemented. The Research Park has been re-positioned to become highly visible and engaged in the business and higher education community throughout South Florida, and Duffell has forged links between Research Park companies and the student and faculty body at FAU that have resulted in new research projects, commercialization of intellectual property and employment of FAU graduates by Research Park companies. As a result, the Research Park is recognized as a valuable asset in the region’s economic development efforts. |
