World Ocean Day
Celebrate with the International Ocean Film Festival at FAU Harbor Branch
By Chelsey Matheson
World Ocean Day is Saturday, June 8. To celebrate, Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute will host the 2024 International Ocean Film Festival: Florida Tour.
The public is invited to daylong festivities on the FAU Harbor Branch waterfront campus, including screenings of seven original ocean-inspired films, meet-and-greets with scientists, an environment-themed exhibitor showcase, food trucks and the new life-sized inflatable humpback whale exhibit.
The festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Morning film screenings will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A repeat of the films will play in the afternoon from 2:15 to 4 p.m. The films will transport viewers all over the world and cover topics including mangrove restoration in El Salvador, an exploration of the Verde Island Passage in the Philippines and the return of manatees to the Crystal River in Florida.
Tickets are $25 and must be secured in advance. Visit www.fau.edu/hboi/filmfest to purchase.

About World Ocean Day
The first World Ocean Day was organized in 2002 by the Ocean Project to bring global attention to protecting and preserving the oceans. The United Nations officially recognized World Ocean Day as June 8 in 2008. In 2024, a new multi-year action theme was launched - “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean and Climate” - with the goal of growing the World Ocean Day movement through collaborations to create a healthy blue planet and a just, more equitable and sustainable society.
