Tracking Hurricanes
FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science is the premier sponsor of the WPTV NewsChannel 5 First Alert Hurricane Preparedness Tour.
Storms can have devastating effects on South Florida homes and businesses, and the best way to avoid damage is to be prepared. The College of Engineering and Computer Science at FAU is sponsoring WPTV’s First Alert Weather campaign as this year’s hurricane season begins.
Weather watchers have hit the road with WPTV meteorologists who will visit each of the five counties in the viewing area and attend training on severe weather topics. Training will include discussions on what to do to prepare for hurricanes, the impact of severe weather on our community, and Q & A sessions with trained meteorologists to answer any weather-related questions participants might have.
The opening session was recently held at FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science on the Boca Raton campus and will culminate on May 31 on FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter.
In addition to sponsoring this current initiative, researchers at the College of Engineering and Computer Science are designing, building and installing unique systems that provide precise, multi-dimensional data used by NOAA’s weather modeling systems.
The volumes of data collected from these systems provide meteorologists with the accurate information that we all need to face storms. They are significant to improving our community’s readiness, responsiveness, and resilience to extreme weather events. The College of Engineering and Computer Science at FAU, being a leader in sensing technology, makes all of this happen in our region.
