Novel low-level Light Therapy for Veterans with Mild TBI
Purpose: To understand how low level light therapy treatment affects Veterans with mild TBI
Inclusion Criteria:
- Military veteran or civilian with a mild TBI
- Willing and able to provide consent
Exclusion Criteria:
- Brain aneurysms
- Scalp tumors/malignant lesions
- Pregnancy
- Epilepsy
- Taking medications or products that cause skin sensitivity to sun/artificial light
- Sensitive skin
- Allergy to the Brain Boost light wavelength (810 nm).
During this 12-week project:
The intervention group will:
- Visit FAU (Dr. Forbes' lab) 3 times a week for 8 weeks and one time 4 weeks after treatment
- Wear a helmet that emits LED low level light for 30 minutes each visit
- Complete an electroencephalogram at 4 time points
- Collect biologic samples at 3 time points
- Complete a series of surveys at 4 time points
The waitlist group will:
- Visit FAU (Dr. Forbes' lab) at 3 time points
- Complete an electroencephalogram at 3 time points
- Collect biologic samples at 2 time points
- Complete a series of surveys at 3 time points
- Be offered the intervention at a later time
