What is a research study?
A research study is an investigation conducted to discover new information and answer a question about a specific topic. Researchers may want to learn about how we behave and function, if a new medication works and if it is safe, or if there are things that we can do every day to stay healthy and live longer.
Why should I participate in a research study?
Participation in research studies is voluntary. Clinical research studies can lead to new information that can improve health and lives of current population and future generations.
Who is leading the study?
Studies in the CRU are usually led by scientists, nurses, and/or physicians who work at FAU. They may also work with healthcare providers and scientists from other academic institutions and organizations.
How much of my time will it take?
Each study is different. The time required for each visit and number of visits depend on each research study. If you know which study you are particularly interested in, we can provide this information to you.
Will there be any risks?
Each study will have different risks. Some studies may ask you to answer questionnaires and survey questions, while others may ask you to donate your blood, urine, stool, and/or saliva. Some studies may also require the measurements of height and weight. Risks related to each study will be discussed with you before you are asked to sign a consent form and enroll in a study.
What are the benefits of being in a research study?
You may learn new things about your health, but you may also not benefit at all from participating in a research study. Usually, the society will benefit in the future from the information that you provide in a research study.
Do I get paid?
Some research studies provide compensation for participation, but each study is different. You may get a gift card, but the amount will depend on a study that you are participating in.
Will my health information be shared with other people?
Your personal and medical information is kept private and only shared with people who work on a research study. Your information may be shared with groups that help to protect research volunteers, such as the Office of Human Research Protections and members of FAU, including the Institutional Review Board (IRB), a team that oversees the research at FAU.
Where are you located?
The CRU is located on the FAU Boca Raton campus. Some study visits may also take place at other FAU locations and community centers.
How do I get there? Where do I park?
Refer to the driving directions and the FAU Boca Raton campus map for guidance.
