The Nat and Dorothy Hyman (NDH) Science Lecture Series was made possible by Florida Atlantic alumnus, Jerry Hyman, son of Nat and Dorothy Hyman. The NDH Science Lecture Series was created to encourage and inspire students in the sciences, and provide access to educational lectures by leaders in the scientific fields for FAU students, faculty, and community members, free of charge. This lecture series is organized by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

Last year NASA launched its most ambitious and potentially revolutionary space telescopes to date. While getting the James Webb Space Telescope to orbit challenged our technical knowhow, the scientific payoff has been nothing short of extraordinary. With the first observations transforming our view of the universe, it is already clear that “the Webb effect,” the awe inspired by the observatory’s imagery and scientific data, will supersede those marked by its well known predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope. My talk will center on the technical achievement of the launch and commissioning of the Webb Space Telescope, the scientific excellence already being realized by the observatory, and the social effectuation Webb will have, on the public and on the way science is done.

About Dr. Louis-Gregory Strolger
Dr. Louis-Gregory (Lou) Strolger's scientific research explores supernovae, cosmology, and dark energy, where he primarily works on the nature of supernovae progenitors through bulk analyses of events and environments, and the evolution of these properties over cosmic time. He is an alumnus of the Physics program at Earlham College, and received his M.S. in Astronomy, and his Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics, from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Strolger has been involved in science policy for much of his professional career, in roles for the Science Policies Group at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), and in several service roles to societal and professional advisory committees. Notably, he had a key role in developing the dual-anonymous peer review process for observing time on the Hubble Space Telescope, which has been adopted at many astronomical observatories, and is rapidly gaining interest in physics communities and with federal granting agencies. He currently serves as an At-Large member of the Board of Trustees for the American Astronomical Society, and a member of the Astrophysics Advisory Committee: a FACA science advisory committee for NASA.

Directions from I-95 and Spanish River Blvd. Exit
- Exit I-95 at Spanish River Blvd.
- Continue straight and curve right onto FAU Blvd. Follow the curve past Lot 5.
- At the first traffic light you see, make a right.
- At the second traffic light you see, make a right.
- Park on the second floor of the garage and enter through the stairway door in the garage.
- You will find student volunteers along the way.

- Glades Road East to the third traffic light past I-95.
- Turn left into the FAU main entrance.
- Continue on the road until you the second stop light, then turn left.
- Park on the second floor of the garage and enter through the stairway door in the garage

Parking in Garage 3
Located next to the Schmidt Family Complex and the FAU stadium, parking garage 3 is the primary parking area for Schmidt Family Complex events. Park on the fourth floor and take the elevator to enter the Schmidt Family Complex.
