The M.D. Student Oath
Each year, students entering the College of Medicine write their own code of conduct to govern their actions as medical students for the next four years.
During Orientation week, students work together in small groups, guided by faculty and senior medical students, to discuss a series of cases and explore issues such as the unique relationship that exists between a doctor and a patient, academic integrity, and dealing with personal stress.
Students must concur on wording of the Class Oath, as this pledge is recited by the entire class at the White Coat Ceremony on the last day of Orientation to medical school. It confirms their commitment as a class to the traditions and standards of medicine and the responsibilities that come with it.
